Two channels that increasingly go hand in hand
Email marketers have been warming up to social media for the past year, using social elements like “share with your network” and buttons to connect with brands on Twitter and Facebook in email campaigns. Email and social media also go together in…

Rumor on the street is that according to technology blog Tech Crunch, Facebook will be rolling out their very own email client today. We covered this rumor about a month ago, but now it seems that it will become a reality.
“Project Titan”, as it is code named has been internally been called Facebook’s “Gmail-Killer”. This could be big news since it would be an easy transition for Facebook users to adopt. Roughly 500 million users on Facebook could instantly turn Facebook into the leading email client. Microsoft Hotmail has had the rule of the roost since it’s inception with over 364 million users, but now could be pushed aside by Facebook.

Wow. It’s easy to think of Google as part of the furniture these days and focus on the new wunderkind Facebook. However, this shows that Google is showing no signs of stopping it’s rise in importance.
Google Now Accounts for 6.4% of Internet Traffic
The Internet is growing fast, but Google is growing even faster. According to online security company Arbor Networks, Google now represents an average 6.4% of all Internet traffic.
This is a new record for Google, as it gained more than 1% of all Internet traffic share since January. Now, only one global ISP handles more traffic, and a lot of that traffic is – unsurprisingly – Google’s traffic.

I love this video that College Humor did. Movies would be a lot shorter if they had smartphones in them… especially social networks.

Bing continues to challenge Google as the internet’s leading search engine. This time the Microsoft Bing team plans to tap into Jay-Z’s 4 million plus fans online to build awareness and popularity among Bing, and sway users away from Google.
Essentially a geo-caching contest, Bing and Jay-Z will be placing a page from his 300 page book, “Decoded.” across 15 different cities around the world. Fans can find clues to the pages whereabouts by logging into bing.com/jayz. The contest will yield 200 winners and will last until November 20, 2010.
“We are looking for ways to grow the Bing audience and we definitely see this as an innovative way to introduce Bing to a new audience.” says Lisa Gurry, director of marketing at Bing.
This new initiative is Bing’s first campaign which will be integrated through their new partnership with Facebook. Facebook Connect will be used for registration and log ins, and Jay-Z’s Facebook page will be used to give out clues.

Today at 10AM PST, Facebook is set to announce a few new initiatives. Many believe the new initiatives are mobile centric, relating to a possible Facebook phone or discuss a deeper integration with Skype. According to Marketing VOX, earlier this year, rumors swirled about Project Titan, the code named email project. It supposedly will be an actual email system (POP3/IMAP and SMTP). Facebook users would be able to have their own @facebook.com email alias.
The mass that is Facebook, roughly 500 million users, could possibly take over the email world. Instantly, you would have 500 million email users under the Facebook umbrella. If Facebook’s interface is simple, clean, and easy to user (e.g. Gmail-esque), I could really see many users from other cluttered clients (Yahoo, Hotmail) make a permanent switch.
Why, you ask? Well, the folks at Facebook are always trying to explore new ways to allow advertisers greater reach to their 500 million users. An email client would allow specific ads based on the email content (similar to how Gmail works). This has been a huge success for Gmail, which has roughly 200 million members. An @facebook.com email client is a win win for many, and will push online marketers to become much more integrated into social media, and social media spending.

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in central Pennsylvania imposed a campus-wide week long ban on Facebook, Twitter, instant messaging and other related social networking sites to conduct a behavioral study. The week has passed, the study is complete and the results are in. The study showed being connected through social media can increase stress, weaken personal relationships, and even cause sleep loss. I’m sure most people would expect this sort of outcome, but would hate to admit how much social media is a part of their life. “Students realized that social media, especially Facebook and instant messaging, if not managed properly, can take over their lives,” said Eric Darr, the college provost.
The 800 student college is the first school to conduct such a research study. Many students that complied with the study understand the realm of addiction and reliance on social media in their lives. Although the results are still be analyzed, the study reinforces that social media should be used alongside old-fashioned face-to-face communication.
